Important Update to Flickr's Terms of Service
Our age requirement is changing, with specific updates for UK users | | Hi childrenarehere,
We're writing to inform you of an important update to our Terms of Service, effective July 24, 2025, which will apply to all users globally. What's Changing For Everyone The primary update is that Flickr will now require all new users to be 18 years of age or older to create an account. This change helps us align with evolving global online safety standards and ensures a consistent and safe environment for our entire community. For Users in the United Kingdom: Important Changes to Content Access Due to new UK regulations designed to protect minors online, we are implementing a specific change for how content is accessed within the UK. Effective July 24, 2025: - Access to content with SafeSearch turned OFF will require a Flickr Pro subscription.
- This is because a Pro subscription requires credit card verification, which serves as age assurance under UK law.
What this means for you in the UK - Free Users: SafeSearch will be automatically enabled by default. To view all content on Flickr, you will need to upgrade to a Pro account.
- Pro Users: No action is needed. Your ability to turn SafeSearch off remains unchanged.
How This Affects All Users Traveling to the UK If you travel to the United Kingdom, your Flickr experience will temporarily align with UK regulations. While you are in the UK, SafeSearch may be automatically enabled on your account. Your full account access and settings will be restored automatically once you leave the UK. What You Need to Do - For Users Outside the UK: No action is required on your part.
- For Users Inside the UK: Please be aware that after July 24, free users will have SafeSearch enabled by default. To view all content, an upgrade to Flickr Pro will be required.
We appreciate your understanding as we navigate these new requirements to keep our global community safe. You can review the updated Terms of Service here. For any questions, please visit our Flickr Help Center. Best regards,

Big news for CC users: Version 4.0 is coming to Flickr!
A smoother, smarter, more global license upgrade—no action needed. | A long-awaited upgrade! Creative Commons 4.0 arriving soon to Flickr. Hi childrenarehere,
This June, Flickr is rolling out support for version 4.0 of the Creative Commons license suite – the most global, legally robust licenses produced by CC yet. Here's what's in it for you: - If your account defaults to one of the six Creative Commons 2.0 licenses, we'll automatically upgrade it to 4.0 for all your future uploads. Easy peasy—no clicks required.
- Your existing photos with CC 2.0 licenses? They'll stay just as they are unless you decide to update them.
- Prefer other license types or dedication tools? Not to worry—those won't be affected by this change.
Creative Commons 4.0 brings clearer terms, better international usability, and more flexibility for creators like you. We're excited to support a stronger, smarter future for open sharing on Flickr. Got questions? Our Support Heroes are here to help. Keep creating.

[Service Update] Upcoming change to your free account.
Have questions? Our Support Heroes are here to help. | | Hi childrenarehere,
We're reaching out to let you know about an upcoming change to Flickr's free accounts. What's changing: Starting May 15, 2025, Flickr will restrict the downloading of original and large (larger than 1024px) sizes of photos owned by free accounts. If you use a free account, this update applies to both your own content and to content shared by other free members. In addition, videos stored on free accounts will no longer be downloadable once the change takes effect. Why we're making this change: We're addressing the misuse of free accounts as cloud storage for original files—a practice that violates our Terms of Service and negatively impacts the performance and experience for Pro members. By limiting access to original and large-size downloads from free accounts, we can help preserve the integrity of the platform and continue delivering high-quality service to our Pro community. What's not changing: - Your original files will still be stored on Flickr
- Medium and smaller sizes will remain available for download
- This restriction won't apply to Creative Commons licensed photos (unless they're private)
- Flickr Commons members are exempt from this change and will retain access to all download sizes.
Want to keep access to original-size downloads? Upgrade to Flickr Pro before May 15 and you will maintain uninterrupted access to original and large size downloads. As a Pro member, you'll also enjoy unlimited storage, ad-free browsing, and advanced stats. You can access and download all of your content and associated data, including original files, at any time by submitting a request through the Flickr Data section of your account settings page. We understand this update may impact how you use Flickr, but it's a necessary step to keep our platform healthy, fair, and aligned with our community guidelines. If you have any questions, please reach out to our help desk. Keep creating,

[IMPORTANT] Free account limit enforcement changes.
Restricted and Moderate content enforcement | | Hi childrenarehere, Beginning May 1, 2022, Flickr will start enforcing our recently-announced Free account changes regarding Restricted and Moderate content. What this means: Free accounts with Restricted or Moderate content will be considered in violation of our terms of service and subject to removal. Accounts found in violation of our terms will need to either subscribe to Flickr Pro or remove the content in violation. These changes don't affect your ability to view or hide moderate or restricted content. See our FAQ video for more details. Flickr Free members who want to upload or continue to have Restricted or Moderate content will need to upgrade their accounts to Flickr Pro by May 1. | |
